Islam Makhachev is a Russian mixed martial artist who has competed in the UFC since 2015 and is a former lightweight champion.

Islam Makhachev was born in 1991 in Makhachkala. He began training in sports at an early age. His interests included wushu sanda, freestyle wrestling, and judo, and later combat sambo.

At the age of 17, the athlete tried his hand as a professional, competing under the auspices of M-1 Global. He has won five victories, many of them spectacular and impressive. He also became the Russian and world champion in combat sambo.

In 2015, the athlete began competing with the renowned UFC promotion. But after his first victory over Leo Kuntz, he suffered a quick knockout from Adrian Martins, and then a disqualification for drug use.

After the investigation and the Russian's acquittal, a series of brilliant victories awaited him. His opponents included Arman Tsarukyan, Davi Ramos, Gleison Tibau, and others.

2022 turned out to be a very successful year for the athlete. He became the UFC lightweight champion, defeating Brazilian Charles Oliveira. Makhachev became the second Russian fighter after Nurmagomedov to win the UFC lightweight title.

In 2023, the fighter faced Alexander Volkanovski twice and defended his lightweight title. Islam officially tops the UFC weight class rankings.

In 2024, the Russian defeated Dustin Poirier and immediately announced his desire to win the welterweight title. He realized his intention in the spring of 2025.
